A Modular Approach to Logistics: GREEN-LOG’s BYOD Application

Author: Montserrat Anglès / Mosaic Factor

Urban logistics operations rely heavily on smooth coordination between planning systems and on-the-ground execution. Ensuring that drivers and logistics operators have access to the right information at the right time remains a key challenge for efficient and sustainable freight delivery.

To address this, the GREEN-LOG project has developed and validated its Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) mobile application—a user-friendly solution designed to support drivers, couriers, and logistics operators in executing and monitoring urban freight operations.

Developed as part of the GREEN-LOG digital ecosystem, the BYOD application bridges the gap between planning and real-world operations. It enables field personnel to access delivery information, follow assigned routes, report operational data, and provide feedback directly from their own mobile devices. By leveraging widely available smartphones and tablets, the solution offers a practical and scalable approach to digitalising urban logistics without requiring dedicated hardware.

A key feature of the BYOD application is its modular design. It provides a set of core functionalities that can be readily adopted by small and medium-sized logistics operators, helping to lower barriers to digitalisation. At the same time, organisations with more advanced requirements can extend the application’s capabilities through the integration of additional Software Development Kits (SDKs). This allows them to progressively incorporate new services and functionalities as their operational needs evolve, ensuring flexibility across a wide range of business sizes and logistics scenarios.

The final version of the application includes a comprehensive set of features to support day-to-day logistics operations. Users can access delivery tasks and route guidance, confirm deliveries, collect operational data, and communicate feedback from the field. During the second round of demonstrations, the application was further enhanced with additional functionalities requested by end users, including proof-of-delivery features and improved management of parcel groups and delivery batches. These enhancements simplify delivery workflows, reduce administrative effort, and improve the overall user experience.

A major achievement of the project has been the successful deployment and testing of the BYOD application in real operational environments. The solution was implemented in the Living Labs of Ispra, Barcelona, and Athens, where drivers and logistics operators integrated it into their daily activities. These demonstrations provided valuable insights into user requirements and operational workflows, enabling the project team to refine the application and ensure its suitability for diverse urban logistics contexts.

Throughout the development process, the BYOD application evolved through multiple iterations, incorporating feedback from Living Lab participants and stakeholders. This collaborative approach significantly improved usability, reliability, and functionality, ensuring that the final solution effectively addresses the practical needs of logistics operators and delivery personnel.

The completed BYOD application represents an important outcome of the GREEN-LOG project, offering a flexible and accessible tool to support sustainable urban freight operations. By facilitating seamless communication between field operators and digital planning tools, it contributes to more efficient logistics processes and better-informed decision-making.

The successful validation of the application across three Living Labs demonstrates its strong potential for wider adoption in different cities and logistics scenarios. Its modular architecture, combined with the ability to scale functionalities according to user needs, makes it particularly attractive for organisations seeking a gradual and cost-effective digitalisation pathway. Together with the other digital solutions developed within GREEN-LOG, the BYOD application highlights how innovative technologies can help modernise urban logistics and support the transition towards smarter and more sustainable freight system.
