Smarter cities through smarter logistics: Introducing GREEN-LOG’s AIMP

Author: Montserrat Anglès / Mosaic Factor

Urban freight systems are becoming increasingly complex, requiring better tools to support planning, optimisation, and decision-making. City authorities and logistics operators must balance efficiency, cost, and environmental impact while responding to rapidly evolving urban dynamics.

To address these challenges, the GREEN-LOG project has developed its Augmented Intelligence Modelling Platform (AIMP), a comprehensive decision-support tool for planning, optimising, and evaluating sustainable urban freight operations.

Over the course of the project, the AIMP has evolved from an initial concept into a fully operational platform integrating advanced demand forecasting, route optimisation, and simulation capabilities. It supports the planning of last-mile delivery operations and multimodal fleets, enabling stakeholders to assess alternative logistics strategies and make informed, data-driven decisions.

The final version of the AIMP brings together several innovative modules within a unified environment. Users can forecast delivery demand, optimise routes and fleet allocation, and evaluate operational scenarios through simulation. Designed to support both strategic planning and day-to-day operations, the platform helps organisations balance efficiency, cost, and environmental performance.

A major milestone in the project has been the successful testing and validation of the platform in real-world conditions. The AIMP was deployed in the Oxfordshire Living Lab (United Kingdom), where logistics operators used it to support planning and decision-making activities. These trials demonstrated the platform’s ability to address realistic operational challenges and confirmed its value as a practical tool for urban logistics management.

The development followed an iterative approach, with multiple releases progressively expanding the platform’s capabilities. Throughout this process, feedback from Living Lab partners and end users played a crucial role in refining functionalities, improving usability, and ensuring alignment with real operational needs.

The completed AIMP represents one of the key technological outcomes of the GREEN-LOG project. By combining artificial intelligence techniques, optimisation algorithms, and simulation-based analysis, it provides a powerful environment for evaluating innovative logistics solutions and supporting the transition towards more sustainable urban freight systems.

The successful delivery and validation of the AIMP marks an important achievement for GREEN-LOG, demonstrating how advanced digital tools can drive the transformation of urban logistics and contribute to more efficient, resilient, and environmentally friendly cities.
